Link Dump: #40

This kitty comes to us from Tom Tykwer’s Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006), recently named by reader Christianne as one of the best horror movies of the past decade, and recently reviewed by Andreas over at 366 Weird Movies. It’s got a half-naked Ben Whishaw and the sonorous voice of Alan Rickman; what more could you want? How about some links?

In my most recent “Mix Tape” piece over at The Film Experience, I pay tribute to one of the sexiest, greatest song, dance, and striptease numbers in all of film. Specifically, it’s the “Put the Blame on Mame” scene from Gilda, wherein Rita Hayworth burns up the stage in a Rio de Janeiro nightclub with her raw sexual power. As she struts her way into our collective hearts (and nether regions), she also does for black satin gloves what Liza Minnelli did for bowler hats in Cabaret: she turns them into persuasively sexy accessories to her dance, props brimming with erotic energy.

There’s a lot to love in Gilda, including its fiery love/hate relationship, its weird set design, and its overt homoeroticism. But “Put the Blame on Mame” is by far the best part, a few endlessly rewatchable minutes of seduction, style, and psychosexual gamesmanship. Head on over and read more of what I had to say!

“Me olvidaras…”

Porque te vas…

Over at The Film Experience, I’ve posted a short piece about the use of Jeanette’s song “Porque Te Vas” in Carlos Saura’s Cría Cuervos. I’d love it if you took a look. It was a pleasure to write because Cría Cuervos is one of my very favorite films, a pensive and deeply sorrowful rumination on lost childhood, as seen through the eyes of la pobrecita Ana. Better yet, she’s played by the unfathomably talented Ana Torrent (seriously, she makes Tatum O’Neal look like shit), and her mother/future self is the always great Geraldine Chaplin.

It’s that rare cocktail of fortuitous casting mixed with muted but effective style, and writing that conjures up all the strange myths and misunderstandings of childhood. This movie gets at deep-down truths. It’s not just a key classic of ’70s Spanish cinema; it’s also one of the most resonant, mesmerizing films ever made with or about kids. “Porque Te Vas,” with its vulgar, melancholy beauty, is vital to that power. In case you can’t tell, the movie and its use of this song mean a lot to me. What Cría Cuervos accomplishes is, by and large, why I love movies.

One of my favorite parts about the fun-but-forgettable Go, aside from the guts and raw energy of Sarah Polley, was this kitty. Look at it! It’s so cute and it’s terrifyingly telepathic! This is why you don’t pop tons of Ecstasy. Because that’s when cats start messing with you. In other news, the Internet has been happening for the past two weeks. Here’s the best of it:

  • I love my minimal movie posters, and these Stanley Kubrick pictogram posters are both well-made and dryly funny. (Also, spoiler warning on Full Metal Jacket!)
  • This Total Film article about inserting Doc Brown into every other time travel movie is pretty hilarious, and very British.
  • Pajiba has a list of “The 50 Most Expensive Movies of All Time,” with their budgets and grosses listed, plus some fun/informative trivia.
  • Badass Digest inducts Pauline Kael into its “Badass Hall of Fame,” which is a very appropriate place for her. I don’t think I’m alone in saying that Ms. Kael is a personal hero of mine, and the piece is thoughtfully written; give it a quick read!
  • The two things I never get tired of, Black Swan and Rebecca Black’s memetastic “Friday,” have finally been combined into one horrifying/funny video. (Huge spoiler alert for Black Swan.)
  • Few directors are as eloquent or congenial as David Cronenberg, and interviews with him are always a pleasure to read. This Q&A from Macleans.ca is no exception, as he dishes out yummy details about A Dangerous Method. (SO EXCITED!!)
  • Jonathan Coe in The Guardian digs into the hazards of the literary adaptation, with special emphasis on Barney’s Version and John Huston’s The Dead.
  • The YouTube channel MisterSharp has a series of hilarious pseudo-educational videos, including “The Bizarre World of the Bisexual,” which made me laugh out loud several times and is highly worth a view.
  • For The New Yorker, Tad Friend talks about the comic genius of Anna Faris, a woman we love around these parts. (This is also probably the most praise you’ll ever hear for The House Bunny.)

We had some weeeeeird search terms! I like the rhyming and biological inaccuracy of “zit on my clit,” and of course I adore the utterly inexplicable “george w bush sex in bed.” I was kind of creeped out, not gonna lie, by “female dead hand,” but the best two were definitely “молчание ягнят,” which is Russian for Silence of the Lambs (yay international readers!) and “i dont know why they dont explodes.” I don’t know why either. Maybe someday we’ll all find out.

Oh, that poor kitty from Drag Me to Hell. Clearly Alison Lohman just cannot be entrusted with animals. At least it got to spend its last moments on earth bein’ all cute and lying around in a laundry basket. Sorry that the Link Dumps have been MIA for the past two weeks, but between a lack of Internet access, moving back and forth, and preparing frantically for MoCCA Fest, it’s been hard to sit down long enough to post them. So here you go, as compensation: a compilation of the best (non-Rebecca-Black-related) Internet stuff from the past two weeks.

  • Here’s a fucking brilliant piece by Michael Dwyer of PopThought all about Blue Valentine, the MPAA, and American attitudes toward sexuality. This is sophisticated cultural commentary.
  • We all knew the Phelps family (of Westboro Baptist Church fame) was more than a little fucked up. Now we have proof, from the mouth of Fred Phelps’s son Nathan, who explains some of the disturbing but unsurprising secrets behind his family’s behavior.
  • Did you know that the anti-choice movement is also the Thought Police? A woman in Iowa was  jailed for thinking about having an abortion.
  • In less ragey news, what’s a collaboration that we’ve all always fucking wanted? Tom Waits and David Lynch.
  • Empire Online has the “Ultimate Shirt And Tie Picture Quiz,” wherein you match the suit to the movie. I got 8; how well can you do?
  • Todd Brown of Twitch has a pretty sophisticated piece about the effect of the PG-13 rating on movies for kids ages 10-13.
  • Rue Morgue offers up “100 Alternative Horror Films,” with some fun, relatively obscure additions like The Changeling, Martin, and Wait Until Dark.
  • Courtesy of our friends at Dead Homer Society, we have Fredrik Larsson’s medley of Simpsons song covers. He has a great voice and does wonderful segues; definitely go watch that video.

We had the occasional bizarre search term over the last few weeks. Some highlights include “pretend rape goes wrong”—I don’t even want to think about how it went wrong—and “Эмбер Хёрд,” which Google Translate informs me is Russian for “Amber Heard.” Someone was obviously very confused about the concept of pussy; how else to explain “pussy-???.???.???.???” Someone else was just confused in general, asking “what to do with myself”? Finally, I’m kind of honored: someone actually searched directly for “black swan andreas stoehr.” Hopefully they found the words of wisdom they were (presumably) looking for.
